CELTS IN THE COTSWALDS
Norgren Social Club, Shipston on Stour, South Warwickshire
Friday 15 February -Concert (7.30 pm)
Saturday 16 February
Music Workshops (10-4)
Concert (8 pm till late)

The aims of Celtic Spirit are to raise the awareness of traditional Celtic
music and dance, and to encourage the teaching of Celtic music and dance,
creating learning opportunities between the older and younger generations of
Celtic musicians. The first Celtic Festival came about in the furtherance of
these aims by re-uniting a group of Scottish and Breton musicians in 1996.
The Festival has developed and this year has representatives of some of the
main Celtic areas.

Friday 15 February
Making a first appearance are Xim, the Norwich-based band featuring Nick
Carpenter (melodeons, darabuka and tambourine), Kate Ross (flutes, bass and
djembe), Paddy Shaw (bagpipes and bass) and Frank Vickers (hurdy gurdy and
bodhran), with a repertoire of sparkling tunes inspired by the traditional
rhythms of central France (with titles like 2CV and Clint Eastwood Waltz).

Snap, the Edinburgh-based ceilidh band, make a welcome return with Sarah
Northcott (fiddle, bass & caller), Ros Gasson (fiddle), Stewart MacDonald
(bazuki & guitar), Ben Stevens (accordian & mandola), Roy Carbarns (bass &
guitar), Tom Grassie (flute, whistle & caller), and Matt Smith (percussion),
playing an exciting mixture of traditional and modern Scottish music. Snap
have played Scottish ceilidhs at the Celts in the Cotswolds Festival for the
last four years. They are the Scottish contingent of Snap Chouchenn, a
Scots/Breton band formed in Donegal in 1996.

Local band The Gathering are Gavin Stewart (Celts in the Cotswolds 2001), on
guitar and vocals, Jim Cox, on lead guitar, and Nick Ashford, on mandolin
and bass guitar. The band formed following a chance meeting at a musical
event in April 2001 and their accoustically-based songs embrace many styles
of modern and ancestral music.

Saturday 16 February (daytime): workshops
Fiddle (Sarah Northcott, Marion Morgan, Jo O'Donnell, Tom Leary), Bodhran,
Melodeon (Nick Carpenter), Whistle (Graham Horne), French music (Xim),
Appalachian and other dance, plus others tbc. Adults: £5 (concessions
£2.50); children: FREE. (1 free workshop with each weekend ticket.) Some
workshops have a limited number of places so book early to avoid
disappointment.

Saturday 16 February (evening)
Making a welcome return are the exciting young Breton band, Gwelloc'h. Based
in Finistere, they are the Beaumin brothers - Eric (flute and bombarde),
Fabrice (Bazouki, guitar and accordion) and Olivier (keyboards and bodhran).
The result is a fiery blend of Breton music with influences from the other
Celtic nations.

New to the festival are Shkayla, featuring the renowned fiddle player Joe
O'Donnell (ex East of Eden, Rory Gallagher and numerous other), Martin
Jenkins on guitar (ex Whippersnapper) and Ray Jenkins  on percussion, with a
lively folk rock set.

Mark Harmer is a local musician, who began playing the harp six years ago
and enjoys arranging old melodies for this instrument.

Kick the Bucket are a local group of Appalachian Clog Dancers, a form of
dance developed in America by émigré Scots.

TOM & BARBARA BROWN'S NEWSLETTER: JANUARY 2002
We hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas, and have a happy and peaceful
New Year, filled with love, friendship, song and music. We've been out
mumming with the North Devon Mummers, now in their 32nd year, raising money
for local charities, and had some good sessions afterwards.  The Shammick
Acoustic sessions in the village are going well, with a few more people
having a go at singing, and writing songs, including one on the Foot and
Mouth epidemic, which of course had hit our area very badly.  Hilary Spencer
is visiting the session in January, and Judy Cook from the U.S. in March.

We had a three really good tours during the Autumn and early part of the
Winter, performing at some excellent clubs - they might not be the clubs
that get to win the BBC awards, but they're full, they're enthusiastic, and
they SING!  Wonderful!  The organisers can be justly proud of the atmosphere
they help to create.  We also performed at a story-telling club, which was
very interesting, and of course, a lot of the songs we sing are tales of one
kind or another.  It would be great to do more in that field.

Tours
We've bookings in the diary right up to April 2003, although with plenty of
spaces still to fill, of course.  If your local folk organiser hasn't yet
booked us, perhaps doesn't even know us, and you would like to see us there,
please put them in touch with us. We've had successful nights at all sorts
of clubs, not just ones with a traditional bias.  As one reviewer kindly
said, 'Tom & Barbara set out to entertain with material firmly rooted in the
tradition, and succeed in making their music accessible to a wide-ranging
audience, through their infectious enthusiasm and love of the songs they
sing.'  We may well be able to fit in some other nights while we're in your
area.  Has your club got any spaces to fill?

New CD
We'll be back at Wild Goose Studios at the beginning of February to record
the next CD, Prevailing Winds,  to be released in May.  We'll be helped
again by Brenda Burnside, Keith Holloway, Barry Lister, and Charley Yarwood,
as well as Mel Barber, Jan Barnes, John Garrick, Ralph Jordan, Colin
Thompson, Rowan Walker-Brown and Malcolm Woods.  The previous CD, Where
Umber Flows, is still selling well.  If you want a copy, you can send us a
cheque made out to 'Umber Music' for £12.75 and we'll send you one.  We've
also been having good sales from our 'touring box' of CDs, which includes
Tony Rose's 'Bare Bones' and Nic Jones' double-CD 'Unearthed', which has
been selling like hot cakes!  The money received for those goes to Tony &
Nic, although we make a small mark-up on the others, which helps offset
travelling costs!  We've also started carrying several CDs from the Fellside
catalogue.  If you're coming to one of our gigs, bring the cheque book - don
't miss out on the opportunity to buy some really excellent CDs.

Future Newsletters
We're now sending out as many newsletters as possible by e-mail - it's
cheaper and probably more dependable than the post - so if you have an
e-mail address, please let us know on <tom.brown1@virgin.net>. From then on,
you'll receive all of them (that's three a year), rather than just when we'
re going to be in your area.

Website
We're still working towards getting our own website up and running,  but
spare time seems to be at a premium at present.  You can find our a bit more
about us, though, if you go to www.exmoorfolkmusic.co.uk.

Tom Leary, who regularly plays with guitar supremo, Kevin Dempsey, has

Always ready to try something new and following a successful debut

ROB MACKILLOP - Scottish lute music, ancient and modern
Rob MacKillop will be performing three premieres of works written for him in
a programme of  Scottish lute music, ancient and modern, at Boarhills
Church,
Boarhills (near St Andrews), Friday 1st February, 2002 at 7.30pm. Phone the
Crawford Arts Centre, St Andrews for further details: 01334 474610. There is
also an 'outdoor light work' by the former Artist Fellow at the Crawford
Arts Centre, Christina McBride, which is a light drawing on the outside of
Boarhills Church using sensitised tape and ultra-violet lighting.

The new works were sposored by the Scottish Arts Council and the Hope Scott
Trust. They are:

The Oud Player of Rosslyn - Edward McGuire
The Old Composer Remembers - John Purser
The Rosslyn Oud - John Maxwell Geddes

The outer works were influenced by Rob MacKillop's researches into the
origins of the lute in Scotland, for which he was a recipient in 2001 of a
Churchill Fellowship which enabled him to study Sufi oud (lute) music in
Istanbul and Morocco.

The programme includes the premiere performance of Rob MacKillop's 'The
Healing - a pibroch for lute', and also performances of 'Nine', a poem by
James Robertson to an improvised oud accompaniment, and 'MacKillop's Rant'
by Matt Seattle.

F. Pibroch for lute - MacKillop

(from the programme note:)
This programme brings together both the ancient Scottish lute music (much of
it from Fife) and  new works written for the performer, Rob MacKillop. It
includes the World Premiers of works by three of Scotland's leading
composers, Edward McGuire, John Purser and John Maxwell Geddes.

Over 500 Scottish lute pieces survive from the 17th century, yet the lute
had been popular in Scotland since its introduction in the 13th century. Rob
MacKillop is the leading exponent of this repertoire, and in 2001 he was
awarded a Churchill Travelling Fellowship to trace the roots of the lute in
Morocco and Turkey where he studied with Sufi musicians. The lute arrived in
Scotland via the Crusades, Pilgrimage and 'Egyptians' (gypsies). One
important centre in the 15th century was Rosslyn Chapel, ten miles south of
Edinburgh. Three lutars (the Scottish name for lute players, not the English
'lutenists') are engraved on the Lady Chapel, and one of them seems to be
sporting a turban.

The surviving lute music bridges the cultural divide (not a very wide one in
Scotland) between classical and traditional music. The new works pay homage
to the Middle Eastern origins of the lute ('oud' in Arabic) as well as
continuing the tradition of Scottish lute music. The new commissions were
sponsored by the Hope Scott Trust and the Scottish Arts Council.

Rob MacKillop has recorded 7 cds of early Scottish lute and guitar music and
has performed this repertoire in tours of Japan and Europe. He has given
academic papers at international symposia as well as being employed by Fife
Council Arts to give workshops in Schools. He is currently Musician in
Residence at Madras College in St Andrews and Lecturer in Lute at the Royal
Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
