| ROBIN LAING "Edinburgh Skyline" Greentrax Recordings CDTRAX 021 | ||||
|
A digital reissue of Robin Laing's first Greentrax recording which will complement his more recent work "Walking in Time" (GREENTRAX 072) and "The Angel's Share" (GREENTRAX 137). Best known as a writer of songs, this album contains ten of Robin's own. There is also one from the ballad tradition, "Andrew Lammie" and one from another singer/songwriter, Anne Lister's "Icarus". Good tunes complement the lyrics of all the songs here, although fuller arrangements could have highlighted and brought more out of the material. Robin has a dark and often roguish notion of humour which is only allowed to briefly surface on one of these tracks - "Burke and Hare". His warm, understated vocals however, shine through on "The Union Canal", "Love is Born", "Ulysses", "Isle of Eigg" and "Andrew Lammie". Peter Fairbairn |
