JOHN McEVOY "Returning" Chart Music CD057

The notes to this excellent release inform us that John McEvoy was born in Birmingham of Irish parents and was immersed in the thriving traditional music scene from the start. In 1978 he moved to Dublin and became a prominent member of the music scene there. John has been a member of the groups Kelp and Bakerswell, with whom he toured the USA. "Returning" however is his first solo recording and what a debut it is! A stunning album of traditional Irish fiddle music.

Faultless technique and obvious love of music make John McEvoy one of the finest fiddle players around. The lovely mellow tone of John's fiddle give the music a wonderful underlying "loneliness", not dreary though, all selection sparkle with vigour and life.

With the exception of two unaccompanied tracks, a highly charged set dance and atmospheric air, John is accompanied on all tracks very sympathetically and tastefully by his wife Jacinta on piano or guitar. Between them they produce just over forty-two minutes of beautiful music, reels, jigs, hornpipes and the above mentioned set dance and air.

The repertoire is impeccable and John's list of sources and influences reads like a who's who of the Irish tradition. While acknowledging the inspirational "Solid Rocks of Irish traditional music" wherever the tunes come from and with whom they are associated, John McEvoy makes them his own.

I can find no fault with any aspect of this CD, fine music well played, excellent sound, nice notes, a cracker! I highly recommend "Returning" and look forward to John McEvoy's next release. Wonderful.
