THE CAST - "Colours of Lichen" - Culburnie CUL109D

It would be possible to review this CD by Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis in one word - BRILLIANT.

But it deserves more. It deserves as much exposure as possible. It deserves to be in everyone's collection. Yes I think it's that good. But I thought their first was a great debut album with that moving version of "Auld Lang Syne". This is better. What makes it so good? At first it's those vocals, especially on "The Piper and the Maker" and Stan Roger's "Giant". But then it's the fiddle on the tune sets. And finally it's the care with which everything has been put together, the selection of material, the arranging, production and the recording, as well as the excellent notes.

But don't take my word for it -- get yourself a copy now. We are at a time when albums of the year are decided. I don't think that it will beat Norma Waterson's, Gaughan's or Shooglenifty's, but in my list it would be there or thereabouts. Definitely one of the albums of 1996.

Don't waste any more time reading this - go and buy a copy now. Me? I'm going to wear my copy out!!!!
