IAN ROBB - "From Different Angels" - Fallen Angel Music FAM 01CD

This album is an unexpected gem. On first reading the accompanying notes and credits it all seemed so incongruous - produced in Canada (although with ultra-English traditional roots), unlikely pairings of instruments (e.g. dobro and mandolin, electric guitar and hammered dulcimer) and a strong Stan Rogers, Ewan MacColl slant. What was this potential mess going to sound like. Well, it is a belter of an album. Everybody seems to be having an absolute ball in the studio - but the focus of the album is the confident vocals of Ian Robb himself on the songs coupled with his breakneck big dipper concertina playing on the instrumental tracks. New wave folk it ain't, but if you are looking for a mature retrospective of the revival - viewed from an educated vantage point - then this album will not disappoint.
