FIONA DRIVER "The Orkney Fiddler" Newton Hill Records FDF002

Sometime ago an acquaintance of mine asked if I had heard the playing of a young fiddler from Orkney named Fiona Driver. He was very enthusiastic, now I know why. This CD contains over fifty-two minutes of the finest fiddle music I have heard for a long time. Fiona Driver is very talented having already won several prestigious awards for her playing, I say already because James Clouston tells us in his notes that in 1997, when this CD was issued, Fiona had only been playing the fiddle for "three years or so".

There are tunes from many sources in Fiona Driver's repertoire as played on this CD but it is the inclusion of several very fine self penned items, an award winner for composition too! That shows what an all round talent she has.

With appropriate accompaniment skilfully supplied by Billy Peace Keyboards and accordion and Stewart Shearer - guitar, "The Orkney Fiddler" is a well produced and excellently played CD. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.
