DAVE SWARBRICK "Live at Jacksons Lane" Musikfolk MFCD514

I think that this is Swarb's first live solo album - the only other which comes to mind was with Martin Carthy - and it's long overdue. What you have here is Dave Swarbrick solo, live and with no overdubs. There's wonderful playing, singing as only he can and, what has become his trademark, the 'noises off', there's even the cigarette lighter!

We all know Dave in his many guises and partnerships - the latest with Alistair Hulett being particularly exciting - but I wonder how many will have seen him solo? This CD could redress the balance.

Highlights? Of the songs, 'Lovely Nancy' and a great version of 'The Two Magicians'. Of the tunes take your pick - 'Sheebeg Sheemore' is beautiful, whilst the set with 'The Pepperpot' in it is just tremendous.

My only criticism is that 'Live at Jacksons Lane' was recorded in seven years ago and has only just been allowed to escape. We should have been allowed to enjoy Swarb - warts and all - much earlier.
