Sian James - Di-Gwsg
SIAN JAMES "Di-Gwsg" Sain Recordings SCD2153

Sian James is a seasoned performer with three previous solo albums under her belt following some years with folk group Bwchadnas. This collection of songs is a treasure. It starts, rather curiously, with "Crac" - a brief lament, before the tone of things to follow is set with "Pan ddo'l adre nol". Incorporating a lovely flute backing and a bouncy bit of bodhran it is a sound not far removed from Mary Black, Capercaillie or Loreena McKennitt.

The album is distinctively individual in tone without being samey. "Ffyff ar nodwydd", for example, is quite upbeat and rocky. Not surprising, perhaps, from someone who has sung Saw Doctors numbers on Welsh television.

Don't be put off by the fact the album is sung in Welsh - the musicality of the language adds to the experience. Just consider Sian James for what she is: a contemporary folk artiste spreading the influence of Celtic music to the four corners of the world. Her music deserves an audience, so watch out for this most talented Welsh performer.
