KENNA CAMPBELL (Guth a Shniomhas) a voice that weaves
Macmeanmna SKYECD12

This is a collection of recordings made of Kenna Campbell by the BBC, spanning more than twenty years, from 1972 - 1995 with an additional eight tracks recorded for this CD. Kenna Campbell is from Skye and has long been associated with Gaelic traditions particularly singing and is now principle teacher of Gaelic singing at the Royal Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

Kenna Campbell' s way of singing is what could well be described as stately. A direct, commanding style well suited to the "oran mora" the big songs that she likes and performs so well. Other styles of song are to be heard as well, puirt a beul -" Tha Biodag aig MacThomais", waulking songs -"Tha'n-uisg', tha'n ceo" and a couple written by "Big Mary of the songs" - Mary MacPherson - "Nuair bha mi og" and "Oran Beinn-Li". There are also some examples of another of Kenna Campbell's talents. "As an doimhneachd", is a text adaptation by Kenna Campbell of Psalm 130 "Lord from the depths to thee I cried" and set to one of her own tunes. "Bha buachaillean an duthaich shear", is another adaptation, this time of Luke chapter 2, verses 8-15. Stirring stuff indeed.
