MARK BAZELEY AND JASON RICE "Moor Music" Veteran VT139CD

Mark and Jason represent a true definition of the term 'the living tradition'. "Moor Music" is the long awaited album from the grandsons of Bob Cann and Jack Rice, two of Dartmoor's most celebrated tunesmiths. They preserve the family line with an infectious, youthful vigour as their respective accordion and melodeons fuse across the 14 sets of tunes on offer here. Side by side with pieces selected from their rich heritage, the duo also write their own material, which represents the essence of real English country-dance music today.

"Moor Music" is peppered with jigs and reels throughout, however it's the distinctive waltzes that sparkle, displaying a finely balanced playing technique. Joined on many tracks by the competent backing of Robert Murch (banjo) and Gareth Kiddier (piano), the album exhibits an authentic and timeless appeal.

Released on the Suffolk based Veteran label, it's good to see that what could be classed as minority interest music is being handled with real care, and attention to detail. So often releases from homespun labels can disappoint. In fact the only regretful note related with this CD is that Bob Cann never lived to see the fruits of his labour flourish in such fine fashion. One thing is for sure, Dartmoor and indeed Devon's musical traditions are in safe hands.
