Monksgate – Brian McNeill – 1978 - FMS FMS2045

This was Sandy’s first recording session, and he appears on two of the tracks: "The Duke of Fife’s Welcome to Deeside" and the title track. Sandy has returned the compliment to Brian by including another of the tracks, "Modest Miss France" on his new solo CD, "Crossing the Line".

Kentigern - 1979 - Topic 12TS394

Described at the time by Alastair Clark in "The Scotsman" as "the best Scots group debut since that of the Battlefield Band", this was the only release by the band, which featured the wonderful vocals of Sylvia Barnes as well as the first "warblings" from a very youthful (but even then musically mature) Dougie Pincock! Sandy played mainly cittern with a bit of guitar and banjo, and was responsible for the bulk of the musical arrangements.

Nobody Knows You – Marilyn Middleton Pollock - 1988 - Fellside FE064

After the break-up of Scotland Yard, which sadly never released a commercial recording, Marilyn resumed the pursuit of her solo career and eventually landed a recording deal with Fellside. She asked Sandy to assist on the recording and arrangements and this was the result. Sandy plays acoustic guitar, high-strung guitar, bass guitar and keyboards.

On Safari – 3's a CrowD - 1989 - Quickfire QF001

Whilst making "Nobody Knows You", Sandy renewed an old friendship with Alan Jones and together they formed 3’s a CrowD. Stevie Lawrence was drafted in to help with the recording and was a full member of the band by the time it was finished.

3’s a CrowD played a vast range of instruments between them and on stage resembled three guys in a music shop! This recording features Sandy on guitars, mandolin and banjo, Alan on bouzouki, mandolin, whistles, concertina and vocals, and Stevie on cittern, mandolin, whistles and percussion. The music is largely traditional or traditionally-based, but reflects Sandy’s penchant for complex arrangements and unusual time-signatures, such as a 7/8 reel and a version of Dave Brubeck’s Blue Rondo!

A Song's for Singing – Heather Innes - 1991 - Bluebell Music HS008

Stevie produced this for Heather, and asked Sandy to add guitar to a couple of the tracks – Heart like a Wheel and My Father was a Cocky.

Douce Ambience – 3's a CrowD - 1991 - Quickfire QF002

The band’s second (and final) recording was much broader in its musical scope, the first side maintaining the traditional songs/tunes base, whilst side 2 explores the realms of jazz and classical music, including their famous (or notorious!) version of Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca. The album also features guest vocals by Marilyn Middleton Pollock.

A Doll's House – Marilyn Middleton Pollock - 1992 - Fellside FECD86

Marilyn’s second Fellside album was a much more varied and assured work than its predecessor. The use of 3’s a CrowD as the main backing musicians throughout gave it much more of a "band" feel, while still maintaining emphasis on the songs and the singing. Sandy was again responsible for the musical arrangements, as well as playing guitar, bass guitar and keyboards.

Milestone (so far so good) - 1996 - Stirling Folk Club SFC-CD1

This album was released to mark the tenth anniversary of Stirling Folk Club at the Terraces Hotel, and the bulk of it, including Sandy’s contribution, was recorded live at the hotel during a day-long festival held to celebrate the event.

Betty Nicols Acoustic Music Vol. 1 – 2000

In the past couple of years Betty Nicols Acoustic Music Club in Kirkcaldy has grown from a small and sometimes sparsely-attended back-room pub gig to become a highly popular, friendly and successful venue, which can rival most "official" folk clubs in the country and is enjoyed by local and visiting performers alike. This is largely due to the efforts and energy of its organiser, Sandy Forbes, and the Betty Nicols CD was his brainchild. It features mostly local performers who play regularly at the club, and Sandy (Stanage) appears on one solo track, Carolan’s Draught, plus two tracks with his regular singing partner, Fiona Forbes of Sangsters.

Crossing the Line – Sandy Stanage - 2000
Fishtail Records – FTCD001

After all the above recordings, Sandy has at long last been persuaded to "go it alone", playing his favourite music in his own inimitable style on his first solo CD.
