REPERTOIRE
Sandy
Stanage plays music - on the guitar!
These are the
only limits or definitions Sandy places on his repertoire. The only criteria
for inclusion are that the music has feeling and appeals in some personal way,
and that those feelings can be successfully communicated to the listener via
the instrument. Audiences frequently comment on the way he seems to lose himself
in the music as he plays, and the way he draws the listener in with him, regardless
of the type of music or style of playing: fast, slow, happy or sad. If definitions
are necessary, a glance at the track listing of Sandy’s new solo CD, Crossing
the Line, gives a fair indication of his scope and ability:
FAR FROM HOME (Trad)
SÍ BHEAG, SÍ MHÓR (Carolan)
THE ENTERTAINER (Scott Joplin)
LEAVING STOER (Ivan Drever)
JANINE’S REEL (Jim Sutherland)
LA FILLE AUX CHEVEUX DE LIN (Claude Debussy)
SOURGRASS & GRANITE (Brian Pickell)
MY ONLY SISTER (Pierre Schryer)
WONDERFUL LAND (Lordan)
SUITE CAROLAN II (Carolan)
MISTY (Errol Garner)
CINDY/WATERBOUND (Trad)
MODEST MISS FRANCE (Brian McNeill)
THE HEART ASKS PLEASURE FIRST
(Theme from "The Piano") (Michael Nyman)
ALBATROSS (Peter Green)
But as ever, the only way to really appreciate Sandy’s playing is by listening to his recordings - or better still hear it first-hand, when his love and enjoyment of the music, be it traditional, modern, jazz, classical, or whatever, are most immediate and most rewarding.
