Corrina Hewat was born in Edinburgh and brought up in the Black Isle, near Inverness. After a brief academic spell and with an honours degree in contemporary music under her belt, she lost no time establishing herself as one of the leading exponents of the Clarsach. She is now also widely regarded as one of Scotland’s foremost vocal talents, and has toured the world, delighting audiences in Europe, Canada and the Far East. Here she gives a revivalist take on ‘Annachie Gordon’, or Achannachie, as this ‘muckle sang’ is known in some versions. Popularised decades ago by the English singer Nic Jones, this northeast Scotland ballad was brought to a new generation of young singers by Ireland’s Mary Black. Corrina brings it all back home in a rendition as poignant as it is passionate. When the initial discussions about this project began, Corrina’s harp talents were too great to ignore, so she was pressed into service at the heart of the backing band. |
