Elspeth Cowie has been a leading voice of the tradition for nearly two decades, first with the band Sennachie, then the vocal trio Chantan, and latterly as a soloist. As National Organiser of the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland from 1996 to 2001, she has played a major role in fighting the tradition’s cause in the corridors of power, but that activity, no matter how important, has never stopped her development as a singer. Noted for her rich, smokey voice and her interpretative skills, she uses both to full effect in a dreamlike arrangement of the powerful northeast witchcraft ballad Alison Cross, learned from the great Lizzie Higgins. |
